If you’re new to using a wheelchair-accessible van, figuring out where and how to park can be confusing. At Advanced Driving Systems (ADS), we aim to simplify this process by providing clear information and practical tips to enhance your mobility experience.
Types of Accessible Parking Spaces
Accessible parking spaces are designated to accommodate individuals with mobility challenges. These spaces are typically marked with blue and white signage and may include additional features:
- Standard Accessible Spaces: For vehicles that don’t need a ramp or lift.
- Van-Accessible Spaces: For vehicles with side-entry ramps or lifts, including a striped aisle for ramp deployment.
The striped area next to a van-accessible space provides room for ramp deployment. Parking over these lines can obstruct access for individuals using mobility devices.
Obtaining and Displaying a Parking Placard
Florida offers both permanent and temporary disabled parking permits.
- Permanent Permits: Valid for four years and issued to individuals with long-term mobility impairments or those certified as legally blind. There is no fee for a permanent permit.
- Temporary Permits: Valid for up to six months for individuals with short-term mobility impairments. A $15 fee applies.
Apply by completing Form HSMV 83039, having it signed by a licensed medical professional, and submitting it to your county tax collector.
To avoid getting a ticket, or even towed, you should always make sure your parking placard is clearly visible. Additionally, make sure you are aware of your placard’s expiration date so there is no gap between your old one and your new one. You could get a ticket if you are caught using an expired placard.
Parking Etiquette Tips
- Be Considerate: If you don’t require extra space for a ramp or lift, consider using standard accessible spaces to leave van-accessible spots for those who do.
- Avoid Obstructing Striped Areas: These zones are crucial for safe vehicle entry and exit.
- Stay Informed: Familiarize yourself with local parking regulations to ensure compliance.
